About

Shelby squatting on the ground next to her two dogs: an older black lab and a black and tan dog.

Hi, I'm Shelby. This is a little about me:

I founded Pawsitive Chance Dog Training to help people wanting to train their personal pets as service animals. I spent nearly 7 years training guide dogs and found my passion training dogs to assist people. When I moved to Central Oregon, I continued that passion by creating a service dog program that would allow people to custom train their own dog for their unique needs. I now also work with prospective therapy animal teams and pet families as well! I am a Guide Dog Mobility Instructor, KPA-CTP, CGC Evaluator, and Pet Partners Therapy Team Evaluator - needless to say I enjoy continuing to gain knowledge and expertise

I have two amazing dogs: Chance, a black lab, and Atlas, an Australian Kelpie. I am a dog sport enthusiast and spent many years competing with my dogs in flyball. I have also dabbled in disc, herding, canicross, and lure coursing. In my free time, I enjoy adventuring outside with my dogs and exploring the beautiful landscape that Central Oregon has to offer.

My Philosophy

While I'm not big into labels, I tend to be seen as a positive reinforcement or force free trainer. Essentially, I believe that dog training (and especially service dog training) shouldn't have to involve punishment. Dogs, like people, learn best when told what they should do, not what they shouldn't, and that doing the right thing is consistently rewarded. After all, we are all more willing, eager participants when we are thanked for the hard work we do!

Why "Pawsitive Chance"?

Pawsitive Chance Dog Training was named after my heart dog, a black lab named Chance. I raised him as a puppy for a guide dog organization and when he retired from guide work, I adopted him. When I began training dogs professionally, he was the dog that led me to my belief that every dog should be treated with kindness and compassion, and that training doesn't have to be punishing. I believe every dog deserves a "Pawsitive Chance".
